ASSIGNMENT EXPLANATION

For years many scientists, researchers, the government and communities worked hard to fight the water, but because of soil subsidence, heavy rainfall and sea level rising, attempts to keep Rotterdam high and dry failed.In a controlled manner, the municipalityflooded parts of Rotterdam in 2032. Other parts of the city coped with soil subsidence, for some area’s to impactful on buildings, forcing inhabitants to abandon their houses. This however did not imply the end of the city of Rotterdam.As our society grew to understand the true value technology had to offer the city landscape changed majorly.

Despite the new norm of working from home since the pandemic in 2020/2021, growth of population livingin the city continued to rise. To meet the agreements made in Paris (2015) the city continued to become climate neutral, this impacted the way of living majorly.With little space left for inhabitants to settle. Making the way living space is built change at large.

FORMS OF TRANSPORTATION

To give the inhabitants of Rotterdam as much space as possible, Rotterdam runs on a centralized transportation system. Vehicles for individual use are banned from the city and commutes are in shared vehicles.Transport is viewed as an on-demand personalized service. Everything runs on a shared network collecting data of inhabitants 24/7 to map the best routes through the city. Driving lanes are flexible and change through the day according rush hours of ways people move. Modes of transportation are autonomous and therefore not controlled by human beings.

The what-if question above, in combination with your scenario and chosen form of transportation, forms the starting point for your research and brainstorming process in coming up with a speculative design of a product or service for this future scenario.
